Abstract

This article highlights the very first decor project, as well as its genesis, for what will come to be known as le goût à la grecque in reaction to the excesses of the rococo from the early 1750s. Louis-Joseph Le Lorrain conceived this project for the Count Tessin, in Sweden. It was realized around 1755, seven years before that of Barreau de Chefdeville for the “cabinet flamand” of Lalive de Jully.

The essential role of the painter Louis-Joseph Le Lorrain, in the profound mutation of architecture in the 1750s, seems to have been unjustifiably forgotten today. He was one of the firsts to have detected that Piranese’s engravings rendered in pictures abstract architectural concepts, freed from Vitruvius’ precepts. He was a crucial “passeur” of new concepts for his whole generation. Furthermore, as a talented painter, familiar with the creation of interior design and furniture, he proved himself to be a real innovator in this field. So that Lalive de Jully asserted that his furniture was «composed in the antique style, or, using the much flaunted phrase, in the goût grec». It is the publication of Julien-David Leroy’s book Ruines Des Plus Beaux Monuments De La Grèce in 1758 which highlighted the impropriety of the term goût grec which was replaced with the more rigorous one goût à la grecque.
