The aim of this study is to reveal the influence of the 19th-century French tenement building archetype on the architecture of apartment blocks built in Algiers in the 19th and early 20th centuries, during the French colonization period of Algeria. To this end, the study is being carried out in two stages. The first step is to understand the main elements that led to the tenement building development in the 19th century, and to grasp these fundamental architectural features. Secondly, we will examine the apartment blocks built in Algiers Centrer commune to verify the presence of the architectural logic and rules that dictated the tenement building design. This examination focuses on the apartments spatial organization, on the one hand, and on the street facades composition, on the other.
The main source for this study was the examination of old building permit files in the wilaya of Algiers archives. The field survey consisted of exploring the buildings studied and observing the façades. Finally, the conclusions confirm the similarity between the apartment buildings studied in Algiers and the 19th-century tenement building. Above all, the common architectural rules reflect an architectural expression specific mode of 19th-century social practices and representations. The local specificities observed in the facades composition had no significant effect on the buildings and apartments spatial structure.
