Abstract

The most important reserve of high-quality marble in Portugal is in the region of Alentejo, in the municipalities of Vila Viçosa, Borba, and Estremoz. This natural resource's exploration, transformation, and use go back to the Roman period. Marble from these quarries has been used in civilian and religious buildings, and public construction works, now considered heritage. There is a particular know-how associated with the extraction, transformation, and use of marble that is an essential intangible heritage.

The Projecto História e Património da Indústria do Mármore – PHIM (History and Heritage of the Marble Industry Project) was launched in 2012 to better understand this heritage. It is a long-term multidisciplinary investigation to understand this activity’s economic evolution, players, landscape changes, importance to the community and its role as a distinguishing factor at a cultural and touristic level. This text aims to present the evolution of the PHIM project, particularly its investigation of the contemporary period and integrate it into a global context.
