The mountain landscape is strongly characterized by the close dialogue between the natural environment and the inhabited areas connected to that specific territory. Over the last few decades, the demographic retraction, associated with a progressive reduction of the tourist flows, abandonment, and aging of the population, has led to the gradual disuse of entire Alpine villages.
To contain these phenomena, it is necessary to identify assets and elaborate cultural proposals offering new possibilities to activate the interest of a wider public, whose presence would favour the acquisition of the resources necessary for the conservation, maintenance, and reactivation of this heritage.
The hydroelectric heritage constitutes a real cultural heritage whose valorisation could significantly contribute to the implementation of the educational-cultural offer in mountain environment giving rise to positive externalities capable of reactivating those settlements that today are in a marginal condition and abandonment.
The development of new thematic itineraries aimed at establishing a link between hiking and hydroelectric systems is proposed. Paths could start from the central post downstream and go back to the artificial lakes following the tracks left after the construction of the structures.
They would follow the production cycle of this renewable energy: from the power plant (with its technical infrastructures) to the lakes, incorporating, along the way, not only all the production traces such as compensation tanks or forced pipelines, but also the abandoned villages testimony of vernacular architecture.
