Adaptive Reuse a Sustainable Strategy for the Revitalization of the City: the Case of Monuments Reconverted to Museums in the City of Tlemcen, Algeria
The current urban composition of the Tlemcen city is the result of a divergent evolution from an old centre to other new nuclei presenting the new city. However, these direct and indirect changes have caused migration and depopulation flows from the Medina (old town centre), while referring mainly to social, economic, cultural and political criteria. This Medina is the identity space of the people of Tlemcen and contains the oldest dwellings in the city as well as almost all the historic monuments, including those that are obsolete and require a broader strategy that moves towards urban regeneration and a sustainable global aspect. The event "Tlemcen, capital of Islamic culture" inaugurated the reuse of historical monuments in museums. Indeed, this decision highlights the development of the city and the entire territory. Undoubtedly, this research aims to understand the impact of the adopted adaptive reuse strategy of historical monuments on the willingness to participate in solving the depopulation phenomenon of Tlemcen's old city centre. Thus, it is questionable whether adaptive reuse is sustainable in terms of monument recovery from socio-economic revitalization and urban regeneration. This work was based on an empirical approach, referring to the analysis of depopulation criteria, the process leads to field questioning, in-situ observation and a literature review.
