Little Jean begins to see. Some notes from a book on drawing by Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc

The massive, theoretical work of Viollet-le-Duc ends, in the year of his death, with a little book on drawing, Histoire d’un dessinateur. Comment on apprend à dessiner. Starting from this book, the essay analyses the visionary essence of the work of the French architect, which is based on two principal aspects: reconstruction of the past interpreted in the present, that is to say in a “project”, this being the only option to legitimize the future; a new interpretation of the Middle Ages, a work which is an investigation into an uncontaminated age of architecture, rather than a mere search for a model to copy; a process of reconstruction of “innocence”. Innocence is the virtue with which to face both the study of Mont Blanc and, as little Jean does, the construction of a new world. The background of this visionary attitude is the theme of Modernity – also investigated by Viollet’s friends Théofile Gautier and François-René de Chateaubriand – and of its “domestication” through the comprehension of the past.
