Giovanni Niccolò Servandoni, Charles-François Poerson , Académie de France a Roma, Grand TourAbstract
French Architects in Rome and the Académie de France during the Director of Charles-François Poerson
The training of the architect, painter and set designer Giovanni Niccolò Servandoni, born in Florence in 1695 but of a father from Lyon, took place in his hometown, Rome and London; however, French artistic culture was already part of his cultural landscape well before he settled in Paris in 1724. This article examines the relationships between French architects in Rome, within the stimulating artistic context of the international Grand Tour, which took place before and during Servandoni’s stay in the papal city in 1719–1720. Particular attention is paid to the Académie de France in Rome which, under the direction of the painter Charles-François Poerson from 1704 to 1725, served as an important point of reference, even for young French artists who were not members of it, such as Servandoni himself.
