Rome 1719. The Architectural Scene at the Time of Servandoni's Stay
The theme of this paper concerns the importance of the period that the young Servandoni spent in Rome for his architectural education. This period, which spans the years 1718-1720, was distinguished by the coexistence of numerous architects of various tendencies, who emerged after the simultaneous disappearance from the Roman scene of Carlo Fontana (1638–1714), who died in 1714, and Filippo Juvarra (1678–1736), who moved to Turin in the same year.Viewed in this context, this paper highlights the architectural works recently constructed or under construction in the Holy City that may have piqued Servandoni's interest and enriched his architectural repertoire for his subsequent career.
